What is FSC – What does it stand for?
(Forest Stewardship Council)

  • An international NGO network to promote responsible management of the worlds forests, appropriate where no current systems exist
  • It brings people together to find solutions to the problems caused by bad forest management
  • The council was formed in 1993 by worldwide members of environmental and human-rights organisations

What is PEFC – What does it stand for?
(Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification )
  •  *The PEFC Council is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainable managed forests through independent third party certification. Endorses local systems that are already in place


  • *PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests

  • It guarantees exact origin of source
  • It guarantees that pulp is produced from a correctly managed forest with full environmental accreditations
  • In the longer-term it provides forest sustainability

  • To use the FSC or the PEFC logo, you must be part of the Chain of Custody and must have accreditation


  • All parties involved in the buy and sell chain in the manufacture of the product must also be accredited

  • Accreditation to ISO 14001& ISO 9001 will help to speed up the certification process
  • Demonstrate good environmental credentials
  • Keep accurate records of FSC/PEFC purchases
  • Have an accurate stock control system
  • Demonstrate a good production workflow process
  • Proof of good labelling processes
  • Prove that invoicing process can accommodate chain of custody numbering and definitions
