Pepper are Planet Positive!

680 tonnes a year of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere, more than we emit.

Planet Positive

Planet positive is about going beyond offsetting, neutralising, or balancing just C02 emissions. It’s about creating a sustainable business that gives back more than it consumes. Planet, People and Profit are the 3 P’s of Pepper’s sustainable philosophy. You can’t have a sustainable business without all of them. Creating a company that has a net positive impact on the environment, society and the economy.

We create campaigns, which are actually beneficial to the environment, not detrimental, supporting key principles of the circular economy, renewable clean energy and lean direct mail practices. We’ve decided to take action NOW, not ambitious targets to be net zero by 2030 or even 2025.

We remove 115 tonnes of carbon each year

How do we do this?

We have 2 partnerships with Love Paper and the World Land Trust.

Carbon Balanced PRINTER Green

Utilising The World land Trust methodology we’ve taken a three step process to measure and reduce, before offsetting our residual emissions.

World Land Trust implements high-quality REDD+ projects through the Carbon Balanced Programme, which allows organisations to offset their unavoidable emissions through the protection and restoration of tropical habitats.

REDD can describe the processes of reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions released by deforestation and forest degradation (i.e. protecting standing forest, also known avoided deforestation and degradation).

Love Paper Logo Green

Love paper is an anti-greenwash campaign, dispelling common misconceptions and myths around the print and paper industry.

Carbon Neutral Certificate

What this means for you?

As a result of your marketing spend with Pepper there will be less CO2 in the atmosphere.

We help clients fulfil their environmental obligations, whilst still delivering the exceptional quality, service and ROI from your campaigns that you’ve come to expect from Pepper.

The UK Government has set ambitious targets to cut emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels. This would bring the UK more than three-quarters of the way to net zero by 2050. Using Pepper will help achieve these targets.

You can demonstrate your commitment by proudly featuring the logo's below on your printed materials. You can have a certificate highlighting the amount of C02 balanced and the area of land protected by the World Land Trust.

Logo banner

As well as displaying the logo’s, campaigns can include an environmental statement such as This publication /campaign is certified carbon neutral, printed at an eco-accredited factory to ISO 14001 on a certified carbon neutral press, using vegetable inks, responsibly sourced carbon balanced paper and chemical free processless plates.

Logo's and statements such as Recycle me and Pass to a Friend should also be included and can help to save money on your postage.

Our Initiatives to reduce emmissions.

Minimal Transport

It is all under one roof, having all of our services under one roof, we minimise the miles our printed products travel before they get to market. Many other suppliers have to move heavy consignments around the country by road to various production centres.

Lower mileage means lower CO2.

Solar Power

Every available square inch of the huge roof area at Pepper Communications has been covered in solar panels. They generate 100KW of power and save the whopping amount of 46,000kg of CO2 from being produced, every year.

That’s the equivalent of planting 160 trees every year.

All our our subsequent energy is supplied on a green energy tariff only utilising renewable energy.

Let there be light.

We use smart LED lighting with motion sensors for all our internal factory and office spaces. We are a 24/7 company, so it’s important to Pepper that even when somebody’s home, the lights aren’t always on!

Carbon Neutral Printing Press

Our biggest investment to date is our new CO2 Neutral Heidelberg printing press. This has replaced two older and much less efficient presses. Heidelberg compensate the greenhouse gas emissions generated by our printing press by purchasing climate protection certificates which correspond to the carbon footprint.

Paper

Carbon Balanced and FSC - As standard

Our biggest consumable is paper, so that’s why we offer FSC approved and mixed and 100% recycled paper stocks.

This product is made of material from well-managed FSC -certified forests and from recycled materials. New trees are growing at a rate of 4,400 square km per year.

That’s an area equivalent to 1,500 football pitches being planted every day*.

Using these stocks can also save you money with reduced postage costs. We’ve partnered with the World Land Trust to carbon balance all of our paper as standard for all of our campaigns. It is a simple way for organisations to reduce the carbon impacts of their printed communications, reducing their carbon footprint and impacts on climate change.

How Carbon Balancing works

Put simply, Carbon Balancing is where the carbon impacts of a product or service have been estimated and an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide is either prevented from being released into, or is absorbed from, the atmosphere.

What's in the ink?

We use vegetable-based inks for all standard CMYK printing processes. Vegetable-based inks are less harmful to the environment than their petroleum-based counterparts.

Our printing inks are certified by Cradle to Cradle. This enables Pepper to produce ecologically optimised print products.

Cradle to Cradle Certified™ is a globally recognised measure of safer, more sustainable products made for the circular economy.

Switch Off Campaigns

It’s all the small things that add up! That’s why all our office PCs are set to automatically shut down overnight when not in use, saving 5,000kg of CO2 per year.

How about the plastic?

Where possible we suggest sustainable paper solutions with our latest investment Fusion enclosing line allowing up to 15mm pack depth avoiding plastic all together. Some of our printed products may require poly wrapping and we’d always advise the best method to ensure the campaign arrives as it should. We offer an environmentally friendly option made only from vegetable-based, compostable materials.

All EV Fleet

Our company car fleet is now fully electric and will be powered with the help of our own solar energy.

We’ve installed solar powered EV charging points for use by staff, customers and visitors

Zero waste Philosophy

We’re working with a zero waste philosophy, striving to eliminate waste from each of our processes and every stage of the value chain.

We segregate and recycle all the waste streams that we can such as paper, cardboard, aluminium and plastic to name but a few, fuelling the circular economy for these resources.

Where waste can’t be eliminated, we use zero waste to landfill practices that focus on diverting existing waste away from landfi lls, whether it’s by reducing, reusing, composting or sending waste to energy-recovery facilities.

What else can we do?

Our journey doesn’t have an end point and we’re continuously looking to improve our impact for the environment, our employees and wider society to make a positive impact in all that we do.

We’ll continually monitor our environmental impact and look to review this in line with our environmental policies.

We strive to ensure a positive impact at each stage of our value chain, from data to doormat.
